The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) continued in 2000 to promote development and efficient operation of telecommunication systems and to provide technical assistance. At its annual session, the ITU Council (Geneva, 19-28 July) discussed, among other things, international telecommunication regulations, and adopted several resolutions and decisions covering the Union's reform process and a variety of financial and institutional matters. During the year, the Union staged ITU TELECOM AMERICAS 2000 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 10-15 April), the fourth telecommunication exhibition and forum for the Americas. It also organized the ITU TELECOM ASIA 2000 (Hong Kong, China, 4-9 December), the fifth telecommunication exhibition and forum for Asia and the Pacific. ITU membership remained at 189 in 2000.
